Ferrying, 2009

A single screen holding a quartet of video, Ferry depicts the ocean crossing from the city of Nanaimo to isolated Gabriola Island, part of the Canadian Gulf Islands. Shot at different times and weather, the individual videos depict the entire 20-minute journey from the everyday and the mundane to the rural, the bucolic, the idyllic concept of the cottage or cabin. Sounds of an infant’s impatience mirror the viewer’s impatience as the journey is mapped out in full. Ferry crossings figure in mythological texts, but this is more reminiscent of a family voyage and the boredom associated, than any crossings into the underworld.
